 WHAT IS STAINLESS STEEL?  

Stainless steels are family of steel containing minimum 11% chrome. The principal component ensuring strength against high corrosion of these steels is existence of a dense, stretch, very thin and transparent oxide layer clinging to the surface mightily. Stainless steels acquire resistance against corrosion by acting passively in the chemical reactions thanks to this amorphous layer which is very thin. This oxide layer is formed in the environments having oxygen and it restores its old feature through repairing itself even if it damaged from external effects (cutting, abrasion, machining etc.)      

Stainless steels generally consist of five main groups:  

- Ferrite,
- Martensitic,
- Austenitic,
- Ferrite-austenitic (Dublex),
- Alloys to which sedimentation hardening can be applied.  

The ones most commonly used of these groups are austenitic and ferrite stainless steels undoubtedly. Ferrite stainless steels (201-202-430...) are low carbon contained and contains 12-18% chrome; and austenitic stainless steels  (304) contains 18% chrome and 8% nickel basically. Ferrite stainless steels can be magnetized because it does not contain nickel in its alloy. Because of this reason, the simplest method of testing the product you purchased is to hold a magnet. When composition of total stainless steel production is examined; it is seen that austenitic steel steels are the most used stainless steel in the production of the steels with a rate of 70%.

Demand on stainless steels have shown improvement more than other materials especially in last 20 years as it can bee seen from the following graphic.
